Travel Profile: Carla Morrison

Latin Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Carla Morrison’s love for music began early on, originally performing in several rock bands before turning solo in 2009. After a slew of EP’s, she released her third and latest LP “Amor Supremo” in November 2015 to rave reviews. Ever focused on music, her rising stardom hasn’t distracted her from her sound, as she feverishly spans the globe sharing it with the world.

Chris Remmers: We’re going to talk about where you’ve been and how those places effected your career. Why don’t you start of by telling us a little bit about where you’re from?

Carla Morrison: I am from Tecate, Baja California [in Mexico]. I was born and raised there. I lived a little bit in Phoenix for a couple of years. I’m an independent artist.

CR: How did going up on Baja California mold you musically?

CM: It definitely made my mind more open. I feel like there are a lot of different cultures around – a lot of music. I just felt like I was open to a whole variety of different sounds and drums. It was really good. Just being born on a boarder, wherever you are, makes you more open. It just gives you a whole different experience. I feel like thanks to that I became more alternative or have more versatility to different things musically. I love that about the boarder.

CR: That’s awesome to hear. Would you say that you have experienced any culture shocks throughout your travels playing in different venues, states and countries?

CM: Yes, I think that when I lived in Phoenix. When I moved there it was definitely a culture shock, because it’s one thing going for a weekend to San Diego, but it’s another one living in the states. It was a little scary at first, because I feel like people are very open and out there, which is awesome. But at first, it was like, “Oh my god!” I didn’t know how to go with that. It was a little bit of a culture shock, but then I got over it, loved it and it stayed with me to be open and chatty.

I think that it also made me very open in different areas of the world that I’ve been. Sometimes I’ll be in a place where I’m like, “[Wow], this is different.” It doesn’t impact me as much though, because I’ve already been in many different cultures with friends from different countries. I think I would definitely feel a culture shock if I went somewhere like Japan or India.

CR: Where would you say some of your most memorable shows have been thus far?

CM: Oh, I don’t know! This is the thing, I always feel great about all the shows, small or big. I would say though that Ecuador was pretty interesting. People were very excited about having me there. The show was amazing; people were very loving. Mexico City is always a great place to play. Buenos Aires, Argentina is a great place also. They are very passionate there. At the end of the day I think you know and start to connect the dots that everybody is the same and passionate about music. You always feel the love.

CR: That’s great to hear. I’m sure traveling and being around all sorts of fans is an amazing feeling. Can you touch on the people of Ecuador specifically?

CM: I felt like people were very excited. They knew all the songs. They really wanted to get to know me. They sang, they yelled, they screamed and jumped up and down. They were very attentive. It was really great. The city was very nice. Just the whole experience, I had never been to Ecuador before. It was pretty cool to be there.

CR: How would you say that music and travel fit together in your life? Is it something that you draw inspiration from?

CM: Yes! I definitely write a lot on the road, because when I’m at home I’m always at the office or checking emails. When you’re traveling you really just have to sit there and wait, whether you’re on a plane, bus or train. So, if you keep your phone off, which is my main goal all the time, I try to take everything in and be inspired. Even though we all are very different in different countries with our own routines, I feel like at the end of the day we all are the same. We all work hard to be happy and loved. That definitely inspires me, and it makes me feel very empathetic and close to people. That inspires me a lot.

CR: Definitely, now to segue and peer into your style of personal vacationing, where would you say your perfect vacation would be?

CM: It depends on the mood I’m in, but right now I think Tulum is very, very nice. It’s a little town that’s not too crowded. It’s just very peaceful – the ocean. Everything is just out-of-this-world. I definitely love Tulum a lot.

CR: It’s a city rich in history too! Are there any other vacation spots that you would recommend traveling to?

CM: I love Buenos Aires a lot. I think it was really nice. It’s a great place to go, because culturally it’s very different. It has a lot of different things. It’s like Vegas, New York, Madrid and Mexico at the same time. Specifically, in Mexico though, I love Baja California where I’m from. I love the vineyards and the desert. It’s a beautifully-amazing place to travel.

CR: That sounds amazing. I haven’t been myself and I can’t wait to explore them all. To switch gears a little bit, what are your top three destinations that you still have to hit?

CM: I would love to go to Japan. Number one though would be India, because I just like the culture a lot. I love their food, the way they dress and the music – everything. I love the culture. Then Japan, I feel it’s a very different place, and I would love to experience the weirdness. To me, it’s so Hello Kitty you know? It’s just so crazy. Lastly, I would love to go to Alaska. I would love to see the snow and ice before it just goes away. Alaska or Iceland I would love to go.

CR: Iceland is actually on my bucket list. It’s actually my next stop. I’ve heard that the hot springs and the view of the northern lights are the best you can find in the world.

CM: How cool!

CR: Now, switching it back to your music, what do you have coming up in the near future?

CM: We’re looking to do a couple of shows. Then, I’m looking to try to record the next album by the end of the next year and see what I want to talk and sing about. I don’t know yet what I’m going to do. I’m trying to let it come to me in a very natural way. I definitely want to create new music though and see what I have inside, and share it with the world.

Chris Remmers: Vamos a hablar sobre los lugares que has conocido y como esos lugares han afectado tu carrera. ¿Por qué no comienzas con hablar sobre dónde eres?

Carla Morrison: Nací y fui criada en Tecate, Baja California [en Mexico]. Tambien viví en Phoenix unos años. Soy una artista independiente.

CR: Haber crecida en Baja California, ¿cómo te ha formado esa experiencia musicalmente?

CM: Definitivamente me ha dado diferentes perspectivas. Siento que hay muchas culturas – mucha música. Me sentí muy abierta a la variedad de sonidos y baterías. Fue muy bueno. Sólo en nacer en una frontera, donde estés, te convierte en una persona de mente abierta. Te da una nueva experiencia. Siento que gracias a eso, me he convertida más alternativa o versátil a la variedad en la música. Me encanta mucho ser de la frontera.

CR: Es bueno oír eso. ¿Dirías que has experimentado algún choque cultural durante tus viajes tocando música en diferentes lugares, estados y países?

CM: Sí, pienso que he experimentado eso en Phoenix. Cuando me mude a Phoenix, por cierto que experimente un choque cultural. Es una cosa visitar a San Diego por un fin de semana pero eso otra cosa vivir en los estados unidos. Me dio un poco de miedo al principio porque pienso que la gente es de mente abierta y muy extrovertida, que para mí es genial. Pero al principio, era como “Dios mío”! No sabía cómo acostumbrarme.

Era un choque cultural para mí, pero después me acostumbre, me encantó que la gente era así, y me volví más extrovertida. También creo que me hizo ser más extrovertida en diferentes partes del mundo. De vez en cuando estaré en una ciudad y me dio cuenta que es muy diferente a lo que conozco. Pero no me afecta tanto como antes porque he visitado muchos piases con amigos de muchas culturas. Creo que me sentiría un choque cultural más profundo si visitaría un país como Japón o India.

CR: ¿En dónde dirías que han sido tus shows más memorables hasta ahora?

CM: ¡Uy, no se! Esto es la cosa, siempre me siento orgullosa de todos los shows, grandes o pequeños. Pero yo diría que el show en Ecuador era muy interesante. La gente estaba muy emocionante en tenerme ahí. El show era maravilloso; la gente era muy amable. La Cuidad de México es una ciudad muy estupendo para tocar música. Buenos Aires también. La gente es muy apasionada. Al final uno se da cuenta que todos somos iguales y apasionados por la música. Siempre sientes el amor.

CR: Es bueno oír eso. Estoy seguro que viajando y estando con muchos tipos de aficionados es un sentimiento maravilloso. ¿Puedes comentar sobre la gente de Ecuador específicamente?

CM: Sentía que todos estaban muy emocionados. Sabían todas las canciones. Ellos verdaderamente querían llegar a conocerme. Cantaban, gritaban y saltaban. Eran muy atentos. Era realmente maravilloso. La cuidad era muy bonita. Toda la experiencia era bonita. Nunca había conocido a Ecuador. Era muy divertido estar ahí.

CR: ¿Cómo dirías que la música y los viajes se mezclan en tu vida? ¿Es algo que te inspira en tu música?

CM: Sí. Escribo mucho en el camino porque cuando estoy en casa, siempre me voy a la oficina o estoy leyendo correos electrónicos. Cuando estas de viaje, siempre estás esperando. Puede ser que estés en un avión, autobús o tren. Así que si apagas tu teléfono, lo que siempre intento hacer, trato de observar todo. Es una forma de inspiración. Aunque todos somos muy diferentes viviendo en países diferentes, pienso que todos somos iguales. Todos trabajamos duro para ser feliz y ser amados. Eso me inspira y me hace sentir muy empática y conectada a todos. Eso sí me inspira mucho.

CR: Definitivamente. Ahora, sobre tus preferencias en ir de vacaciones, ¿Dónde dirías ser el lugar perfecto para pasar tus vacaciones?

CM: Depende en cómo me siento pero ahora pienso que Tulum es muy bonito. Es una ciudad pequeña con una buena cantidad de gente pero no llena de gente. Es muy tranquilo – el océano. Está fuera de este mundo. Me encanta Tulum

CR: Es una ciudad con una historia rica también. ¿Hay otros lugares que recomendarías a alguien que quiere ir de vacaciones?

CM: Me encanta Buenos Aires. Creo que es muy bonita. Es un lugar fantástico para visitar porque es muy diferente culturalmente. Es como una combinación de Las Vegas, Nueva York, Madrid y México, todo en uno. Pero específicamente en México, me encanta Baja California de donde soy. Me encantan los viñedos y el desierto. Es un lugar muy hermoso para visitar.

CR: !Suena genial! No conozco pero espero conocer todas esas ciudades. ¿Cuáles son tres destinos que te falta conocer?

CM: Me encantaría conocer Japón. Pero el primer destino sería India porque me gusta mucho la cultura. Me encanta la comida, cómo se visten y la música – todo. Me encanta la cultura. Después me gustaría conocer Japón. Creo que es un lugar muy diferente y me encantaría experimentar la rareza. Para mí, es muy Hello Kitty. Hay mucha locura. Y últimamente me encantaría conocer Alaska. Me encantaría ver la nieve y el hielo antes que se desaparezca. Me encantaría ir a Alaska o Islandia.

CR: Visitar Islandia está en mi lista de cosas que hacer antes de morir. Es mi próximo destino. He escuchado que las aguas termales y el panorama de las luces norteñas son los mejores del mundo.

CM: ¡Fantástico!

CR: Ahora, para volver al tema de tu música, ¿Qué piensas hacer en el futuro inmediato?

CM: Fantástico! Pensamos en hacer unos shows. Después pienso grabar el próximo álbum al final del próximo año y ver lo que quiero hablar o cantar acerca de. No sé todavía lo que voy a hacer. Estoy tratando de dejar que me venga de una manera muy natural. Definitivamente quiero crear música nueva y ver lo que tengo por dentro y compartirlo con el mundo.
